In Europe and other Western countries, the Laughing Buddha is seen as Gautama Siddhartha, the original Buddha from India. Yet the truth is a little different: the Laughing Buddha was a Buddhist Zen monk who lived in China thousands of years ago. His name was Quieci and he was known as the kind and loving one. Quieci was different from most monks. According to legend, his fellow monks praised him for his generous laugh. That is why his nickname became the Laughing Buddha.
