Handmade singing bowl from the Himalayas (16 cm)

Singing bowls come from the Tibetan Buddhist areas in the various states in the Himalayas. They are used as eating bowls, offering bowls, percussion instruments and for meditation. Each singing bowl has its own character, tone and timbre.

A singing bowl produces sound by, among other things, striking it with a striking stick. A more subtle method is to slowly circle the stick around the edge, creating a stick-slip effect. Singing bowls have many overtone resonances with specific beatings. The effect is attributed to resonance. By holding the singing bowl in a different way, other resonance frequencies become dominant and the sound changes. In this case, the bowl rests on three fingers at the bottom.
