In Buddhism, especially in Nepal, mandalas have an important symbolic meaning. They have a round shape, which refers to infinity. There can be different symbols on the mandalas. In this case it is a ring with the Chinese zodiac. A Buddha is depicted within that ring.
Mandalas are used as an aid in meditation. It then serves as a focal point for the gaze.
The Chinese zodiac is a system consisting of twelve animals, each representing a year. A specific animal is therefore associated with a specific year. In Chinese astrology, a person's year of birth says a lot about their personal characteristics. Predictions are also sometimes made about their fate based on the animal of a person's birth year.
The twelve animals of the zodiac are: rat, ox/buffalo, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat/sheep, monkey, rooster, dog and pig/boar.
The mandala is made of brass.
