Special, antique Nkisi Mangaaka from Congo
Special, antique Nkisi Mangaaka from Congo
Meaning
A Nkisi is a spirit or an object inhabited by a spirit. Communication with ancestors and belief in the efficacy of their powers are closely linked to the minkisi (plural for Nkisi) in the tradition of the Congo people. Individuals known as 'banganga' work as healers, sorcerers and intercessors who protect the living from black magic and provide them with remedies for diseases. They do this, among other things, by making minkisi. Others are used for healing or to increase success in hunting or trading.
Minkisi contain bundles of herbs, earth and other spiritually charged substances. Many bundles contain soil or relics from the tomb of a powerful individual as their main component. In this case, the cavity in the abdomen in which the bundles were stored has been emptied. The metal objects represent the active role of the minkisi during a ritual or ceremony. Each nail represents a vow, a signed treaty, or efforts to eradicate evil. Ultimately, these figures usually represent reflections on socially unacceptable behavior and attempts to correct it. They are commonly applied to a variety of objects used throughout the Congo Basin in Central Africa.
The Nkisi Mangaaka is distinguished by the fact that minkisi like these were specifically used for justice and authority.
Origin
This Mangaaka dates from the period 1900-1910 and comes from the collection of Mr. Mbehou, a Cameroonian art dealer who played a major role in the West African art trade in the early 20th century. Other pieces from his collection can be found in major museums such as the Barbier-Mueller in Geneva and the Louvre in Paris.
The age of the Nkisi Mangaaka is reflected, among other things, in the fact that the feet are separated from each other. He has a characteristic clay beard, which may contain spiritually charged substances. The beard also symbolizes strength and authority.
The condition of the item is good, with traces of age and use. Both feet have undergone repairs, which may also be old. The left foot is slightly loose, but the statue is stable.
