Juchem agate from Germany | Idar Oberstein agaat

Kleurrijke agaat uit de Juchem groeve. De omgeving van Idar-Oberstein in het Zuid Westelijk deel van Duitsland was circa 275 miljoen jaar geleden een vulkanisch actief gebied. In de groeve “Juchem” nabij het dorpje Niederwörresbach zijn 2 typen gesteente te onderscheiden die het direct gevolg zijn van dit vulkanisme. Tussen deze 2 basaltachtige gesteenteformaties is een ongeveer 6 meter dik pakket van sedimentair gesteente aanwezig. Dat betekent, dat er ook tijdlang geen vulkanische activiteiten hebben plaatsgevonden. De gehele periode (inclusief die der sedimentatie) heeft ongeveer 4 miljoen jaar geduurd.

Colorful agate from the Juchem quarry. The area around Idar-Oberstein in the south-western part of Germany was a volcanically active area about 275 million years ago. In the quarry “Juchem” near the village of Niederwörresbach, 2 types of rock can be distinguished that are the direct result of this volcanism. Between these 2 basaltic rock formations an approximately 6 meter thick package of sedimentary rock is present. This means that no volcanic activities have taken place for a while. The entire period (including that of sedimentation) lasted about 4 million years.
